Chapter 13

Kaillie and I left the office and started down the hall, following Brianne’s instructions. We passed door after door indicating offices, and I paused halfway down the hall, grabbing Brianne’s arm.

“What is it?” she asked.

I motioned toward a shifter who had left his office a moment earlier and was currently walking down the hall. “That shifter just came out of this office, which means it’s Carey, the guy Bridgit said had issues with Brianne.”

I glanced into the office, which was smaller than Bridgit’s. His phone was open on the desk. “One of us needs to go in there and check it out while the other distracts him.”

Kaillie nodded, immediately understanding. “I’ll take the office. I don’t feel like talking to a misogynistic prick right now—or ever, really—and I know more magic to help get me out of trouble if he comes back before I can leave.”

“Great. I’ll distract him for as long as I can.”

I headed down the hall after the shifter, and I honestly didn’t have a clue what I was going to do. He entered a door to his right, and I followed him to find myself standing in a break room. It was unlike anything I’d ever seen.

The counter was loaded with pastries and baked goods, about half of which had already presumably been eaten. Next to those were a bunch of tiny cauldrons, each holding a different-colored potion. Small signs indicated what each potion was for: short-term energy bursts, long-term energy boost, extra focus, confidence, that sort of thing.

I supposed one was supposed to get a cup of coffee and then add a spoonful of whatever potion they needed to it afterward.

Still, I wasn’t here to look at snacks, as much as I wanted to be. I had to speak to Carey. He heard me enter the room behind him and turned. He was tall with broad shoulders, built like a football player. His long face betrayed his species as a wolf shifter, and his deep-set eyes were the color of coal. He looked frankly a little bit ridiculous in the suit; his muscular body seemed to be trying to climb out of it.

“Carey Lupo?” I asked, and his eyes narrowed.

“Who’s asking.”

“Eliza Emory. I’m investigating Brianne’s death, and I heard you weren’t her biggest fan.”

A low growl escaped the back of Carey’s throat. “Who’s saying that?”

“Quite a few people, really. And given your reaction, I’m going to go ahead and assume it’s true. Unless you want to set the record straight.”

“Thing is, I didn’t have anything against Brianne herself. She was fine. Whatever. I don’t really care about witches. It was the idea of what she stood for.”

“Oh? And what idea was that?”

“Finance is a male’s game. Always has been. Just ask the elves. For thousands of years, it’s been sole territory for my gender, and then these uppity witches come along and decide that they’re going to do the same thing? It’s not natural. Females don’t belong here.”

I raised my eyebrows, not particularly impressed with Carey’s opinion.
